The Battle Company Project was an effort by Dr. Jerry and Ruth Montgomery to provide back home support for the 162 soldiers of the company during their one-year deployment to Afghanistan in 2012.
It began as an idea suggested by one of the company’s soldiers who lived with them in 2011. That single soldier/son became 160 soldier/sons and two soldier/daughters. Their work was supported by The Workplace Institute and University Congregational United Church of Christ in Seattle.
In simple terms we attempted to connect individual soldiers with local partners who remembered the soldier in their daily prayers, and sent notes and care packages from time to time. Supporting local partners included many individuals and families in the Pacific Northwest, plus to a Scout troop in Arizona, an oilfield worker on Alaska’s North Slope, a retired Army First Sergeant in Minnesota, and a former U.S. Marine in California.
